 Weather Update

Please continue to monitor your emails for contact from your professors/HPU about Monday night classes.

From the HPU Emergency Operations Team:

Updated: Thursday, Aug. 7, 12:26 p.m.

Hawai‘i Pacific University is closing its campuses at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 7, in anticipation of Hurricane Iselle's projected pass near/over O‘ahu. As announced yesterday, the campuses will be closed Friday, Aug. 8, and Saturday, Aug. 9.

The closures include the university’s Downtown and Hawaii Loa campuses, the Oceanic Institute of HPU at Makapu‘u Point, and all military base locations. No classes or activities that are scheduled from 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday or Saturday will be held. Additionally, Monday, Aug. 11, HPU classes on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam will not be held.

Only employees deemed as essential — with responsibilities related to campus emergency operations — will be asked to report to work. For all others, do not come to campus when it is closed.

On Thursday, the last university campus shuttle will depart from downtown at 6 p.m., heading toward Hawaii Loa Campus. There will be no shuttle service Friday-Sunday.

As a safety precaution, please shut down all electronics, including computers, printers and monitors. If possible, unplug them. If your office is in danger of flooding, remove electronics from the floor. Please make sure to secure confidential information and lock all doors before you leave.

The university's Emergency Operations Team will continue to monitor Hurricane Iselle and Hurricane Julio’s progress and potential impacts. Should storm-related issues impede normal operations following Saturday, updates will be shared on Sunday morning on the university website (www.hpu.edu) and also HPU’s RAVE Alert emergency messaging system (http://phone.hpu.edu).

Remember to RETURN your rented books!

Term 3-2014 Rental Books are due June 16, 2014

If you rented a textbook for Term 3-2014, it needs to be returned to the Downtown Bookstore by Monday, June 16, 2014.  If off-island, your shipment must be postmarked by June 16, 2014 (instructions to ship your rental can be found on the HPU Bookstore Website).  Receipts are not required, but helpful in processing returns.  Student ID or picture ID is required for the rental returns.  Rented books can be identified by the green rental sticker on the front cover. Rental books must be returned in saleable condition.

Want to keep your rental book?
A buyout of the textbook is available until the due date. Buying out the textbook is a great option for students who would like to keep their textbook or if their book has been lost or damaged. The buyout can be done online under the students' account on the bookstore's website, or in person at the Downtown location.

Students who do not return their rental books by the due date or take advantage of the buyout option will automatically be charged for the replacement cost and a processing fee for the unreturned textbook/s.

The HPU Bookstore Downtown will also be open on Saturday, June 14th, 2014 from 9am-noon to accommodate rental returns.

Some of the things that affect the price offered for your book are:

1. The condition of the book.
2. HPU Bookstore's current stock level of the book.
3. The instructor will not use the book, or is undecided.
4. The national demand for the book.
5. A new edition has been or will soon be published.

Why won't they buy back your book?

1. The condition of the book is too poor and not resaleable.  For example all workbooks and study guides must be in "like new" condition.
2. It is an old edition and will not be used by our instructors going forward.  You may wish to keep these books for your own library since they can still serve as valuable references.
3. The demand for the book is low.  HPU Bookstore doesn't need any more copies and the national demand for the book is low.
