USS Missouri - Overnight Encampment

UPCOMING ADMS OVERNIGHT ENCAMPMENT ON THE BATTLESHIP USS MISSOURI!

SAT/SUN 10-11 NOVEMBER 2012!

The ADMS Executive is currently organizing its ever popular annual overnight encampment on the USS Missouri. This year we are planning to sleepover overnight on the Mighty Mo on Saturday/Sunday 10-11th November.  Check in time on Saturday 10^th will be late afternoon. Checkout time on Sunday 11^th will be mid-morning.

As November 11 is Veterans' Day this is a particularly appropriate time to have the sleepover and reflect upon the contributions and sacrifices made by Veterans and service members everywhere.

The price will be $65. More details will be forthcoming in the near future from the ADMS Executive. In the meantime, please block off the date so you can participate. 

Camp Smith Classes

Classes at Camp Smith - Term 1-2013

Students taking classes at Camp Smith this term will need a badge to enter the building (in addition to the base pass, if needed). 
The badge will be issued to students on the first night of class and must be returned on the last night of classes. 
Not returning the badge will result in a hold on your student account with HPU.

If you are still needing a base pass, please contact Kalani at the Camp Smith office at 544-9318 as soon as possible.

Renting Books?

Planning to rent books?

Students must have a student ID to rent books from the main campus bookstores (rentals are not currently available at the military base locations).

Student IDs can be obtained from the Registrar's Office downtown, located in the Finance Factors Building (UB) Suite 216.

Students with valid military IDs (or DoD IDs) can send us a photo (head-shot) and we can email your request downtown for processing.

Gen Ed Requirements Term 1-2013

Are you trying to figure out which GenEd courses you can take in Term-1? Maybe to balance out the upper division courses you are taking? We have several GenEd courses that you may want to consider.

ARTH 2100 Tribal Arts

This course will examine the indigenous art and architecture of sub Saharan Africa, Native America and the Pacific. It satisfies World A requirement as well as the Art Theme requirement.  This course is offered at Schofield on Wednesday evenings.  **CLASS CANCELED**

ENG 2301 World Film Studies

Like watching movies? This course will examine important feature films that are rarely seen in the United States. It also surveys several national cinemas and international trends, with particular attention to the increasing globalization of the film industry. The learning activities in the class will include film screenings and field trips including to the Hawaii International Film Festival. The last time we offered this course, it received rave reviews from the students. This course satisfies Values B as well as the Art Theme requirement. Consult your advisor as it may also substitute for other GenEd requirements. This course is offered at Pearl on Monday evenings. **CLASS CANCELED**

HIST 2401 American History to 1877

This course may be a good option for History majors. Also, Dr. Jim Corcoran will be teaching the course so it will be a fun, engaging and mind enriching course. It is being offered at Camp Smith on Thursdays.

MARS 1000 Introductory Oceanography

This course is a good option for the Global A requirement. It is usually only offered online and students have been requesting for it to be offered in the classroom. It’s being offered at Pearl on Saturdays.

Attention JADM Majors!

Aloha JADM Majors,

We have almost two more weeks of registration before the start of Term-1. We have quite a number of JADM classes offered at Hickam and online this term so lots of choices.

JADM 1000 Crimes and Criminals

I know this class is not quite appealing since it’s on a Saturday but it’s a great intro to the JADM program. Also, no writing prerequisite is required for the class so if you are still taking Writing and would like to start delving into JADM courses, this would be a good choice.

JADM 3500 Criminal Law

If you are planning to take JADM 3300 Criminal Procedures next term, I recommend you take JADM 3500 this term. Students tend to do better if they take JADM 3500 before JADM 3300. Also, we have Judge Randal Lee teaching the course. He is a Circuit Court Judge and was in the Honolulu Prosecutor’s Office prior to becoming a judge.

JADM 3510 Crime Victims and Justice

This course is an option for your Upper-Division JADM Electives. Professor Jennifer Merkle is the instructor for the course. She is an attorney with the Federal Detention Center. She has prior experiences as a social worker and is very interested in the field of victimology. She will bring personal experiences and real life situations into the classroom. Professor Merkle is also teaching JADM 3310 Law Enforcement: Contemporary Issues online. 

JADM 3550 CSI: Theories and Practices

This course received rave reviews the last time it was offered in class. It includes a visit to the morgue and videos/scenarios assist in the learning environment. Professor Sheryl Sunia retired from the Honolulu Police Department in 2009 after 29 years of service (20 years as a detective). In 2011, she became the first woman to be assigned to the homicide detail. She also worked as a hostage/crisis negotiator and was involved in several high profile cases. With this much experience, I’m sure you would find her class an enriching experience. Professor is also teaching JADM 2050 Basic Criminology online.

We have two more weeks of registration before the start of Term-1. We have some changes to courses offered as well as some interesting courses that may interest you.

INTR 3000/PSCI 3100 International Relations

If you are waiting to take International Relations, it is no longer offered as PSCI 3100 but INTR 3000. It’s offered online this term and the instructor is Kim DeVidts. We are hoping to offer the course in the classroom in Term-3 if you prefer not to take it online.

HIST 4661 History of Military Thought

If you are planning to graduate in May 2013, please take this course in Term-1. This course is normally offered only once a year.

PHIL 2090 Principles of Logic

This course is being taught as a Directed Study this term. The class will meet the first week and possibly another 4 or 5 more times in the classroom. The rest of the time, the course will be online. Since it’s a directed study, we cap the enrollment at 7. There are already 5 students in the class so if you need it to graduate in December 2012, please register as soon as possible.

Most may not see India as relevant but here’s some insight about this country and this course from Dr. James Corcoran:

India is now designated as one of the Pacific Command’s most important security and strategy partners in Asia.  India is the fourth most powerful military in the world, America #1, Russia #2, China #3 (reference Global Firepower,  at http://www.globalfirepower.com/ ). India is in the top 10 of the world’s economies (reference http://www.rediff.com/business/slide-show/slide-show-1-india-to-be-among-top-10-economic-superpowers/20120514.htm ).

The competition with China for dominance over the Indian Ocean increases where India’s navy (modeled on the British Navy as a legacy of colonialization) is seen to be superior to China’s (now expanding) navy (Dr. Corcoran’s article on the Indian Navy and Indian Ocean at http://www.hpu.edu/CHSS/History/HistoryDepartment/ADMSNewsletter/admsdeclassifiedfeb.pdf ).

My experience as the Defense and Army Attaché and Security Assistance Officer in Dhaka Bangladesh, working directly together with diplomatic and military personnel from Pakistan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Burma, China and other regional neighbors, combined with my academic studies in the field of India and South Asia make for a course of instruction which combines practical field experience with academic achievement.

This course will include assessment of India in the larger region to include relations with and roles of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Burma, China, Russia, and other major players to include the United States of America.
